If this isn’t the cutest book I’ve ever read…well, then I’ll be geezed.
My sister passed this novel onto me, and let me tell you: I am so glad she did.
Penny and Sam are some wonderful characters. They’ve got a lot of sides to them–Penny loves writing and she’s nerdy and prepared for the apocalypse and in college and hilarious. Sam works in a coffee shop and makes movies (or wants to) and loves to bake and passes out on the sidewalk in front of Penny. As the blurb describes it, “When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness.”
But the novel as a whole is adorable!
It was the kind of romance where you knew that there would be a happy ending. I’m so glad that the two of them built a strong friendship first, though. The book also offers some good female friendship and character growth. Complicated parent relationships are in there. Some narratives on race. It goes on and on.
My one complaint was that I wish this book was longer. I loved the plot and the characters, and I wish Choi had gone more in-depth! I would gladly read more about Penny, Sam, and all of their friends. Nothing about this felt cliched–she did an excellent job of putting a twist on the common cliches and making it new and fresh.
You gotta read it!
Peace,
Short Girl
Awesome review! This sounds super cute.

I’ve seen this around and kind of want to check it out, even though I don’t read a ton of contemporary. I don’t know about unbearable awkwardness because I don’t like getting secondhand awkwardness from characters. :p
